BNR – According to Reuters, the head of trust and safety at Twitter, Ella Irwin, has resigned from the firm. Since billionaire Elon Musk bought it in October, the social media platform has been slammed for insufficient safeguards against malicious content.
In June 2022, Irwin joined Twitter and became in charge of content management. When the former head Yoel Roth left in November, Irwin took over his position as head of the trust and safety team.
An email to Twitter was met with an automatic response that included a poop emoji. Irwin declined to speak further, while Musk did not reply promptly to a request for a remark.
Fallout from Insufficient Safeguards
Irwin’s exit comes at a time when the company is struggling to retain advertisers. The reason is that businesses are wary about being next to inappropriate material.
Musk said earlier this month that he had appointed former NBCUniversal advertising head Linda Yaccarino to be Twitter’s next CEO. Irwin’s internal Slack account looked to have been disabled, according to Fortune.
Since Musk’s takeover, Twitter has drastically reduced its expenditures and terminated hundreds of people. Those who worked to prohibit dangerous and unlawful content, defend election integrity, and surface correct information on the site are among the terminated personnel.
Musk launched Community Notes, a tool that allows users to contribute context and insight to tweets. The newly introduced feature offers a fresh approach to combating false information on Twitter.
Regulatory Scrutiny of Twitter
Regulators are also intensifying monitoring of the company’s moderation efforts. Twitter has pulled out of a voluntary agreement with the European Union to combat disinformation. However, the social media business stated that it is dedicated to complying with impending EU internet regulations.
Last week, EU industry official Thierry Breton warned Twitter that leaving the voluntary agreement would not allow it to evade legal commitments in the EU.
