Tesla CEO to Visit China, meet officials

tesla

BNR – Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, is going to visit China within the next few days. According to sources, this will be the investor’s first trip to the country in three years. Musk will meet with senior Chinese authorities and tour Tesla’s Shanghai facility.

It was unclear who Musk was going to meet with and what they would talk about. People who knew about the trip chose to remain anonymous since the topic is private.

Requests for comment from Tesla and China’s State Council Information Office were not immediately returned. Musk had planned a trip to China and wanted to see Chinese Premier Li Qiang. The meeting was scheduled to take place as early as April, depending on Li’s availability.

China’s Significance for Tesla

After the United States, China is Tesla’s second-biggest market. Furthermore, Tesla’s Shanghai facility is the company’s primary production base. Also, Musk owns Twitter, a social media platform that is banned in China. Some individuals residing in China, however, continue to access the platform using virtual private networks (VPN).

The trip would be Musk’s first visit to China since he made headlines in 2020 by dancing onstage at Tesla’s Shanghai factory. Furthermore, the trip comes at a time when Tesla is dealing with an abundance of challenges. The problems include fierce competition from Chinese car manufacturers. As demand in the world’s largest car market falls, China manufacturers are exporting their Chinese-made electric automobiles.

Challenges and Opportunities

Tesla has yet to provide an update on its aspirations to raise output at its Shanghai facility by 450,000 vehicles per year. However, the company announced in April that it will construct a plant in Shanghai to manufacture Megapack energy storage items.

Tesla has submitted plans to local authorities to increase capacity at the Shanghai factory for making powertrains. The business intends to produce 1.75 million units each year. China’s state planner has been dealing with a capacity surplus in the country’s car sector, which has over 100 competitors. Tesla is constructing a facility in Mexico that will make a low-cost electric vehicle based on its future platform.
