We don’t wish to alarm you, but humanity may just have woken up a mysterious ‘alien intelligence’.
That’s the remarkable claim from UFO expert Nick Pope, who said attempts to scan a cigar-shaped asteroid called ‘Oumuamua may have attracted the attention of whatever is lurking inside.
Although scientists recently announced that the bizarre object was not made by aliens, that hasn’t stopped wild speculation about its origins.
Now Pope, who used to head up the Ministry of Defence’s UFO investigations desk, has said scanning ‘Ouamuamua may have woken it up.
‘Simply put, any alien ship searching for life may go into a dormant mode until it gets close to an inhabited planet,’ he told The Sun.
However, Pope does not appear to believe the asteroid is alien in origin.
‘What’s fascinating about this theory is just how many astronomers and other scientists are taking the idea seriously,’ he added.
‘It’s a sign of how accepting we are these days about the likelihood of finding alien life.’
He suggested that ‘Ouamuamua looked like an interstellar spacecraft because it ‘makes perfect sense to take an asteroid and then build your ship around it, or hollow it out and build inside it, for the protection you’d derive from being surrounded by so much rock’.
Attracting the attention of aliens could prove to be a very bad idea.
Professor Stephen Hawking recently suggested extraterrestrials could be ‘rapacious marauders roaming the cosmos in search of resources to plunder, and planets to conquer and colonize’.
‘Meeting an advanced civilization could be like Native Americans encountering Columbus,’ he continued
‘That didn’t turn out so well.’
