Irans Revolutionary Guards on Thursday rejected reports that they tried to stop a British tanker near the Strait of Hormuz the day before.
In a statement carried by the semi-official Fars News Agency, the guards navy said, “In the past 24 hours there has been no encounter with foreign ships including English ships,” Reuters reported.
According to the U.K. defense ministry, Iranian boats tried to block the tanker British Heritage as it was leaving the Persian Gulf. The HMS Montrose, which was escorting the ship, trained its guns on the alleged Islamic Revolutionary Guard boats and requested they move aside, according to the BBC.
The Iranian boats retreated and no confrontation ensued.
