Google employees form the first union in the company’s history

More than 200 Google employees established a labor union that “strives to protect Alphabet workers”.

In an unprecedented move, more than 200 Google employees established a labor union that “strives to protect Alphabet workers”.

Alphabet, Google’s parent company, witnessed several activities and procedures by the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) to announce its launch.

The first of its kind

According to the New York Times, up to 226 employees signed union cards with Communications Workers of America, one of the country’s largest unions.

The move expresses protest against discriminatory practices at work and the way of dealing with many issues including hate speech over the Internet.

AWU’s vice president said they will launch a number of campaigns to achieve their goals.

Google employees carried out series of strikes during the recent years.

The company’s management said it will communicate with all employees. At the same time, Google’s operations director said that the company is keen to save the rights of all employees.

Needs support

It is possible for the Alphabet not to take the AWU’s demands into consideration. The union can be approved by the state if it gains the majority of employees’ support.

This only happens, when the majority in the workplace votes in favor of the union in elections held by the National Labor Relations Board.

Alternatively, the employer may also recognize the union voluntarily, if a sufficient number of workers approved the union.

According to the Federal Labor Relations Authority, the company responded to previous workers’ attempts to organize a union with illegal dismissals.

Democratic way

“This is historic,” said Dylan Baker, a Google software engineer, in a release. “The first union at a major tech company by and for all tech workers”.

“We will elect representatives, we will make decisions democratically, we will pay dues, and we will hire skilled organizers to ensure all workers at Google know they can work with us if they actually want to see their company reflect their values.”

Andrew Gennier-Dewar, a Google engineer who helped leading AWU, said efforts to build the union began in secret more than a year ago.
