EU Commissioner for Trade Phil Hogan will not quit his post but will issue a more fulsome apology for his attendance at a golf club dinner in breach of coronavirus rules, an official briefed on his plans said Sunday.
Hogan is facing a call from the prime minister and deputy prime minister of Ireland that he reconsider his position in Brussels.
“No resignation,” the official said, when asked whether Hogan would step down.
Hogan will say he has “listened carefully” to the views from Dublin, but there will be no resignation.
Instead, Hogan will issue a statement apologizing “fully and unreservedly for attending the Oireachtas golf society dinner on Wednesday night.”
