Writing in the Sunday Times, former No10 chief strategist Steve Hilton said his old boss “should be on the list” of people lining up to replace Theresa May.

He wrote: “What Britain needs above all is a leader with the confidence and the character to command respect and bring people together from all sides of this bruising two-year national meltdown.

“If there is a Conservative Party leadership election, no doubt many able MPs will throw their hat in the ring.

Cameron resigned as Prime Minister in June 2016 after unsuccessfully backing the Remain campaign.

After more than two years out of the spotlight, it was recently revealed Cameron had scooped his own reality TV series with the BBC, documenting his time in office.

The news came as the Government went into meltdown over leaving the EU, with work and pensions secretary Esther McVey and Brexit secretary Dominic Raab quitting the cabinet.

Mrs May replaced McVey with ex-home secretary Amber Rudd, while the little-known Tory MP Stephen Barclay has replaced Raab.

At a hastily scrambled press briefing, Mrs May issued a stark warning: “If we do not move forward with a Brexit agreement, we cannot know what will follow.

“Leadership is about taking the right decisions, not the easy ones.

“As PM, my job is to bring back a deal that delivers on the vote of the British people by ending free movement, ensuring we're not sending vast annual sums to the EU – but also protects jobs, security and the unity of the UK.

“Am I going to see this through? Yes.”
