Many British holidaymakers chose to switch their overseas jaunts for staycations in 2020 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent travel restrictions. However, for first-time campers, it can take a little bit of getting used to.
One campsite enthusiast has revealed a simple mistake that is commonly made, but which leaves tents feeling a little more “cramped” than anticipated.
The error comes when selecting the right tent.
Though tents are created with indicators of how many people they can sleep, such as “two-man” or “four-man”, one camper has pointed out this may not be quite as roomy as you may expect.
Posting to a Reddit forum dedicated to advice for first-time campers, the campsite frequenter stated: “However many people the tent you are looking at says on it, half it and that’s how many people can comfortably sleep in it.
“If you are keeping gear and want some room to move around in it, divide it by four.
“I take a 4 person instant tent when I go car camping/fishing with my buddies and it is perfect for my air mattress, gear and a reasonable amount of room to manoeuvre.
“If the wife goes I take the eight-person. I can’t stand to feel cramped.”
However, it is not just the tent the holidaymaker claims can leave sleeping quarters feeling uncomfortable.
“I started out with a sleeping bag and switched to a fitted sheet and a blanket.
“Again, sleeping bags make me feel cramped and get all wadded up when rolling around in my sleep,” they continued.
Another camper also shared their tips for staying warm at night when camping.
This is particularly useful for those who are looking to enjoy a winter camping or caravan holiday.
Though extra socks or more jumpers may be the most obvious way to stay warm, one camper had a more inventive suggestion.
Posting to Reddit, the traveller recommended snacking on a chocolate bar before bedtime.
“I like to eat like a snickers bar or something with a lot of calories before I go to sleep so my body will continue to burn off the calories while I sleep and keeping me a little warmer,” explained the camping enthusiast.
Though it might seem confusing at first, other campers backed up the claim.
“Eat something before going to bed. Your body digesting it will keep you warm,” another camper confirmed.
Others recommended packing on the layers when heading to bed and being sure not to miss out a single spot on your body.
“Sleeping bags manage to keep everything warm except your face,” explained one holidaymaker.
“Wear a balaclava or make a shirt into a balaclava to stay warm during the night.”
