Vatican officials will on Friday release voluntary guidelines for the development and use of artificial intelligence technology, with U.S. tech giants IBM and Microsoft among the first signatories.

“In order for AI to act as a tool for the good of humanity and the planet, we must put the topic of protecting human rights in the digital era at the heart of public debate,” said the “Rome Call for AI Ethics,” to be presented during a conference at the Vaticans Pontifical Academy for Life.

By releasing the principles the Catholic Church is weighing in on a debate raging among policymakers and corporations worldwide over whether global rules for AI are necessary and who should write them.

The release comes as both the U.S. and the European Union are moving forward with regulation for AI.

While both Washington and Brussels say they support what both call “risk-based” approaches — with strict rules only applying to AI systems posing high risks to their users — the European Commission has generally urged tougher rules to mitigate the risks of AI technology than the White House, which promotes a soft-touch approach to regulation.
