The U.K. has “in a bad sense literally turned a corner” with a sharp rise in coronavirus infections, the countrys top doctor warned Monday.
Chief Medical Adviser Chris Whitty said that the increase in coronavirus cases could put the country on an exponential curve of deaths, with the winter season posing an additional risk if the numbers arent brought under control.
The message that the country needs to urgently change course took center stage at a briefing from Whitty and Patrick Vallance, the governments chief scientific adviser. Vallance said data suggest that about 6,000 people per day are getting the infection. Meanwhile, official positive tests sat at 3,899 on September 20.
The increase is across all age groups, with the epidemic expected to be doubling roughly every seven days, he said. “If that continues unabated and this grows, doubling every seven days … you would end up with something like 50,000 cases in the middle of October per day,” said Vallance, adding that this was “not a prediction but it is a way of thinking.”
Corresponding deaths in the following month could top 200 a day, he warned.
