Trump spoke to the Prime Minister on the phone as he flew to France to attend events marking the 100 year anniversary of World War One with other world leaders.

Mrs May had called Trump to congratulate him on his partys victories in the midterm elections, which saw the Republican Party win a majority on the Senate.

But the PM received a fiery response from Trump, who lambasted her over her handling of Brexit and approach to Iran, according to the Washington Post.

Under her leadership, Britain was not doing enough to contain Iran, Trump reportedly fumed.

Trump also reportedly moaned about “unfair” trade deals involving the EU and questioned her approach to Brexit.

Mrs May has enjoyed a cordial relationship with Trump, who she was famously pictured holding hands with at the White House shortly after he took office.

But Mrs Mays aides were “shaken by his especially foul mood”, US and European officials told the Post.

"Unfortunately, there was a story that was done which was generally fine but it didn't put in what I said about the Prime Minister and I said a tremendous thing.
