Saudi Arabia’s statistics authority will begin tracking tourism’s contribution to its economic output, according to a statement on Saturday.
The Tourism Establishment Survey will provide data on the industry, including the workforce’s size, pay and revenue and expenditure.
This will help calculate tourism’s GDP share and establish growth rates for activities within the sector, the General Authority for Statistics said.
Saudi Arabia’s sovereign fund announced it had formed a company, called “Cruise Saudi”, to develop a local cruise industry.
The Crown Prince of the kingdom Mohammed Bin Salman tries to turn the country into a global tourism destination.
Bin Salman introduced measures to boost tourism in Saudi Arabia, including allowing visiting unmarried couples to stay together in hotel rooms.
These measures also include removing the ban on female drivers and dropping a strict dress code for foreign women.
Supporting marine tourism
Cruise Saudi aims to establish cruise tourism sector in the kingdom to become a tourist destination for international cruises.
The company’s headquarters are located in Jeddah, on the Red Sea coast. It will form a strategic bridge between sea and land operations and tourist port operations to be developed in several Saudi cities.
Cruise Saudi will also develop tourist destinations, in partnership with the relevant authorities, to establish tour routes.
The company will also provide an exceptional experience for tourists to discover the Saudi heritage and culture.
The company’s launch comes in line with the PIF’s strategy (2021-2025). The plan focuses on unlocking the capabilities of promising non-oil sectors to enhance the kingdom’s efforts to diversify non-oil revenues.
In 2020 summer, Saudi Arabia launched luxury cruise trips in the Red Sea coast for the first time in the kingdom, as part of the Saudi Summer Campaign.
During the past years, Saudi Arabia has launched unprecedented entertainment plans in many areas, such as building cinemas and theaters, and holding concerts of singing and art.
Through Vision 2030, the kingdom seeks to diversify its non-oil revenues, by investing in tourism, entertainment, sports, and more.
