Iraqi Oil Ministry has opened a new gas production unit in the Rumaila oil field, located in Basra Governorate. The Iraqi government aims to boost Iraq’s gas production.

Rumaila field will add 60 million cubic feet per day to the country’s gas production, Iraqi Oil Ministry said.

The project will have a capacity of 120 million cubic feet of gas per day.

The country’s monthly gas production in December 2020 amounted at 77.6 billion cubic feet, according to latest statistics.

According to previous estimates, Iraq has a 132 trillion cubic feet of gas in reserve. Of which, 700 billion cubic feet have been burned for failing to utilize it.

Iraq is still importing gas from Iran, through two pipes, at a rate of 5 million cubic meters per day. Imported Gas from Iran powers the country’s electric power stations.

Promising projects

Last November, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa Al-Kazemi inaugurated the largest domestic tower for producing gas associated with oil extraction from the giant crude fields in the south of the country with a capacity of 400 million standard cubic feet per day.

The Iraqi Oil Ministry said, last month, Iraq had signed a memorandum of understanding with the French company Total. The agreement aims to implement large and promising projects in the country, especially in the field of natural gas and clean energy.

According to the latest report of the Iraqi Ministry of Planning at the end of last year, poverty rates in the country have escalated drastically.

The Iraqi Minister of Planning, Khaled Battal Al-Najm, said COVID-19 repercussions impoverished additional 1.4 million new Iraqis.

The report added that the number of poor people, according to this rise, reached 11,400,000 individuals, after it was about 10 million people before the crisis.

It also said poverty rate increased to 31.7 percent, which was 20 percent in 2018.
