Gentiloni wins backing for Commission despite doubts on detail
Paolo Gentiloni won EU lawmakers support to become European Commission chief on tax and economic affairs despite some criticism for lacking detailed answers.
Party whips in the EU legislatures Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs (ECON) backed Gentiloni for the job in a meeting behind closed doors following Gentilonis three-hour hearing in Brussels.
There was a sufficient consensus among the members with “no need” for a vote, panel chairwoman Irene Tinagli told journalists after the meeting.
Gentiloni had to overcome criticism from conservatives. Markus Ferber, ECONs whip for the center-right European Peoples Party, backed the committees letter of recommendation on the condition of including some critical remarks over what he called evasive responses to questions.
“It is clear that Paolo Gentiloni is an experienced politician,” Ferber said in a statement. “Although we regret the vagueness of his answers, we can approve him, all things considered.”
