Europes coronavirus lockdown exit strategies compared

Ursula von der Leyen wants the departure from coronavirus lockdown to be more synchronized than the scramble by EU governments last month to put confinement measures in place — but national capitals are already taking matters into their own hands.

Asked about the chaotic flurry of border closures by EU countries in mid-March, the European Commission president on Wednesday acknowledged that the uncoordinated actions by national capitals had been far from ideal.

“Indeed the very beginning was difficult because there was little coordination and little communication between member states,” she said when asked about border closures. Von der Leyen was publishing what she calls a “roadmap” for getting out of lockdown that is designed to foster “a gradual, consolidated and coordinated effort across the European Union.”
