U.S. President Donald Trump said he and new U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson have already begun working on a free trade deal, which will be much bigger than would have been possible under EU membership.
The comments came after Trump called Johnson to congratulate him on his new job.
“Were working already on a trade agreement,” Trump told reporters. “And I think itll be a very substantial trade agreement, you know we can do with the U.K., we can do three to four times, we were actually impeded by their relationship with the European Union. We were very much impeded on trade. And I think we can do three to four or five times what were doing.”
Trump described Johnson as a “good guy, a good friend of mine,” adding that “he will be a good prime minister.”
“He has what it takes, they needed him for a long time,” Trump said.
