She is the latest senior Labour politician to support another vote after a poor showing in the EU elections, where they came home in third behind the Liberal Democrats.
Ms Abbott said Labour were “moving towards a clearer line”.
But there is a danger of creating a split in the party and alienating politicians and members wanting to leave the EU.
Mr Corbyn said Labour would “support a public vote on any deal”, on Monday having previously claimed the party would be ready to do it on a bad deal.

Now the Shadow Home Secretary, a key ally of Mr Corbyn, says she wants remain to be on the ballot paper.
She said: “Were supporting a Peoples Vote strongly now because its the right thing to do and its the democratic thing to do.”
Ms Abbott continued: “What were saying is we do want to have a Peoples Vote on any deal and I think thats clear enough.
“It means any deal. This deal, a future deal we may negotiate.
“We want to be clear now, we are foregrounding what was always Labour Party policy, a Peoples Vote.”

Ms Abbott insisted Labours position has remained the same and “ideally we would want a general election” rather than a second referendum.
She told the BBCs Today programme that she thinks remain “should be” an option on a second referendum.
It comes after Labour got 14.1% of the vote at the EU elections, with the Brexit Party first with 31.6% and then the Lib Dems took 20.3% in second place.
Ms Abbott said: “I think we need to move quickly because things are so uncertain.”
