British Airways is facing a fine of £183 million (€207 million) over a data breach in the first public penalty issued by the U.K. under Europes new data regime.

The Information Commissioners Office (ICO) fined British Airways for failing to protect user data after approximately 500,000 web customers were diverted to a fraudulent site, where attackers stole their details. The ICO believes the breach began in June 2018 and involved names, email addresses and credit card information.

Information Commissioner Elizabeth Denham said in a statement: “Peoples personal data is just that – personal. When an organisation fails to protect it from loss, damage or theft it is more than an inconvenience.”

“Thats why the law is clear – when you are entrusted with personal data you must look after it. Those that dont will face scrutiny from my office to check they have taken appropriate steps to protect fundamental privacy rights.”
