Dubai – British energy major Shell has resumed partial operations at the Pearl Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) plant in Qatar. This facility holds the distinction of being the world’s largest gas-to-liquids conversion plant. The restart follows a seven-month suspension caused by damage sustained during the recent conflict involving Iran.

Operational Restart and Strategic Importance

The resumption of activities marks a significant step for global liquid fuel markets. According to information obtained by Washington-based Energy Platform, the return of the Pearl GTL plant is critical due to its massive production volume. It plays a vital role in supplying essential oil derivatives, including petrochemicals and lubricating oils, while supporting global supply chains.

Security Constraints on Shipping

A company spokesperson confirmed the operational restart on Thursday, October 8. He stated that initial operations will allow for the accumulation of limited product stocks within the facility’s storage tanks. However, the ability to ship these products to international markets remains contingent upon regional security conditions. Safe passage for vessels through the Strait of Hormuz is deemed essential for exports.

Production Capacity and Repair Timeline

At full operational capacity, the Pearl GTL plant produces approximately 140 thousand barrels per day of liquid products. It relies on natural gas extracted from Qatar’s North Field for conversion into high-value fuels. Full restoration of this capacity depends on completing repairs to one of its main processing units. These repairs are projected to finish in the first quarter of 2027.

QatarEnergy Market Responses

Concurrently, QatarEnergy is moving to restore naphtha supplies to spot markets after recent disruptions. The state-owned company issued a tender to sell up to 50 thousand tons of naphtha. This offer includes four grades of product, specifically naphtha produced at the Pearl GTL facility. Shipments are scheduled for loading between October 20 and 25, 2026, via FOB terms from Ras Laffan port.

Historical Context and Future Projects

The plant suffered damage to two main processing units during an attack in March 2026, which halted production. Shell previously estimated that complete repairs could take about a year. Meanwhile, Qatar’s gas sector anticipates another development: the readiness of the first LNG production unit under the North East Field expansion project is expected by November 2026.
