Sudan’s implementation of Thamarat (fruits) program that delivers support to needing families faces a set of challenges.

These challenges include the lack of identification papers, bank accounts and national numbers for most families.

The Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning in Sudan has begun preparing to start implementing the second phase of the program. The second stage will support families in 10 states in the first week of next June.

At this stage, the program is expected to reach about 80% of families (13.4 million people). Remittances continue to be delivered to 414,600 families in four states so fat that have completed registration. The registration processes for families that have not completed their data are still ongoing.

According to Thamarat’s communication officer, Mutawakkil Omran, the program continues in the four states covered by the first phase. He indicated that the amounts of funding allocated to families vary according to the number of family members.

Omran said that each individual would receive an amount of $5 per month at the official rate announced by the Bank of Sudan.

There are families who would receive a lower amount of $3 per person, he added, which makes it difficult to determine the size of the total amount of funding at the present time, especially since there are families who have not completed the registration procedures in the program.

The transitional government in Sudan completed, the day before yesterday, the implementation of the first phase of the Thamarat.

On February 24, the government launched the program, with an amount of $400 million, in 4 states, including Khartoum, Kassala, the Red Sea, and South Darfur.

The government also implemented the transfer of financial sums to the beneficiary families through a number of government banks (Khartoum, the Saudi Sudanese Bank, the family, commercial farms, savings and social development) through the electronic wallet.

The process was also done with the help of telecommunications companies through the phone banking service in coordination with the ministries and competent authorities.

In addition to the total amount allocated to each family, the program allocated an increase of 3.5% to agents and points of sale to ensure that no amounts are deducted from families after the withdrawal service and to ensure that the full amounts are delivered to families without any deduction.

The program depends on the national number as a basic document in all of its stages, beginning with registration in the centers designated in the administrative units in the localities.
