Egyptian Tourism

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism expects a recovery in tourism sector after Russia decided to resume flights to Egypt.

Ghada Shalaby, Deputy Minister of Tourism of Egypt, estimates that more than a million Russian tourists will come to Egypt this year.

Russian tourists have stopped coming to Egypt since 2015 after the crash of a Russian passenger and 224 people in it were killed.

The Russian Interfax News Agency reported last week that flights might be resumed in the second half of next May.

There are many in the private sector who have been waiting for this decision for what the Russian tourism represents, Shalaby said to Reuters.

The country expects to attract more than 1 million Russian tourists during the rest of 2021 as direct flights between both countries are set to resume, Ghada Shalaby added.

Egypt is aiming for tourism revenues of $6 billion-$7 billion in 2021, the deputy tourism minister told Reuters.

About 13.1 million tourists visited Egypt in 2019, with revenues of $13.03 billion. However, due to the Coronavirus pandemic, revenues in 2020 fell by about 70% to $4 billion. The number of tourists reached 3.5 million.

Important source

Russian tourism companies had indicated the possibility of launching tourist trips from Russia to Egyptian resorts within a week of announcing the resumption of charter flights with Egypt.

Earlier, the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister, Mikhail Bogdanov, revealed the imminent resumption of charter flights from Russia to Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh resorts in Egypt.

The resumption of flights from Russia to Egyptian resorts will contribute to enhancing tourism in Egypt. Before the flight was suspended, Russia was a major source of tourism in Egypt, which generates billions of dollars on the Egyptian treasury.

The tourism sector welcomed the announcement by the Russian Foreign Ministry that charter flights are expected to resume with Hurghada and Sharm el-Sheikh resorts in Egypt soon.

This coincides with the end of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities sterilization and disinfection of 130 hotels in Sharm el-Sheikh from the 170 hotels they work in, in addition to 244 hotels out of 260 hotels in Hurghada.

These measures come within a framework to protect and prevent the repercussions of the emerging Coronavirus, and in light of the precautionary measures and measures taken by the state to confront the virus.
