The European Commission is backing France in its trade fight with U.S. President Donald Trump over a digital services tax.

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer on Monday night threatened to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on $2.4 billion worth of French products such as Dom Pérignon and Roquefort cheese over a digital tax that Washington says unfairly targets companies such as Google and Amazon.

Should Trump impose these tariffs on France, “the EU will react in a proportionate manner,” EU trade chief Phil Hogan said Wednesday after a meeting with French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire in Brussels.
