Germany has suspended its extradition agreement with Hong Kong, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said Friday.

The decision came after Hong Kongs leader Carrie Lam postponed legislative elections planned for September by a year because of the coronavirus pandemic.

“The decision by the Hong Kong government to disqualify 12 opposition candidates and to postpone elections to the Legislative Council represents a further infringement of the rights of Hong Kongs citizens,” Maas said in a statement. “In view of these latest developments, we have decided to suspend our extradition agreement with Hong Kong.”

Germanys move comes after the U.K., Canada and Australia all suspended their agreements with the Chinese-ruled city. The U.S. has also signaled its intention to do the same and earlier Friday the White House
