It emerged overnight that the director of the CIA has secretly met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, to lay groundwork for direct talks with President Donald Trump.

European markets were on track to make some gains this morning.

The FTSE is expected to be 0.25 per cent higher at 7,244, while Germany's Dax is set to open up 0.28 per cent at 12,620 and the French Cac is seen up by 0.31 per cent at 5,370, according to IG.

Asian shares rose after Wall Street looked more upbeat yesterday, with MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan up 0.5 per cent. But continued concerns over a possible trade war held back growth. Shanghai blue chips were down 0.2 per cent soon after opening. But Japan's Nikkei was up 1.2 per cent as Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe embarked on a visit to Donald Trump, during which he is expected to try and persuade the President back into the Pacific trade pact.
