Watch Puerto Rico governor’s face when Trump gives himself 10/10 for effort
Donald Trump can’t help but add to the category of cringe that is the Puerto Rico response.
This time he’s giving himself ten out of ten for the way for the way he handled hurricane relief. Literally.
The president was with Puerto Rico governor Ricardo Rosselló when a journalist asked him to rate his response out of ten.
He responded without hesitation: ‘I’d say it was a ten.
‘I’d say it was probably the most difficult when you talk about relief when you talk about search, when you talk about all the different levels, and even when you talk about the lives saved, you look at the number. This was — I think it was — was than Katrina.
‘It was in many ways worse than anything people have seen. They got hit by a category four — grazed — but grazed a big portion of the island. That was bad. But then they got hit dead center by a category five. Nobody’s ever heard of a category five hitting land. I give ourselves a ten.’
Trump said ‘we were there before the storm hit’ and ‘provided so much, so fast’.
This may be so. But the president has been grilled for lacking a soft touch while dealing with the hurricane.
It goes back to his visit to Puerto Rico.
First, there was that comment he made about officials spending too much money on the rescue.
He said: ‘Now, I hate to tell you, Puerto Rico, but you’ve thrown our budget a little out of whack.’
Realizing what he’s said (and that numerous people have died), he begins to backtrack so fast.
Trump continued: ‘We’ve spent a lot of money on Puerto Rico and that’s fine, we’ve saved a lot of lives.
‘If you look at the — every death is a horror — but if you look at a real catastrophe like Katrina, and you look at the tremendous hundreds and hundreds and hundreds that died, and you look at what happened here with really a storm that was just totally over powering, nobody’s ever seen anything like this — what is your death count?
’16 people versus in the thousands. You can be very proud. 16 versus literally thousands of people.’
Painful. But not as painful as when he was filmed throwing paper towels into a crowd of hurricane victims like he was playing basketball.
Carmen Yulín Cruz, mayor of San Juan, called the president ‘abominable’ as she dismantled his flying tour.
She said: ‘This was a PR, 17-minute meeting. ‘In fact, this terrible and abominable view of him throwing paper towels, and throwing provisions at people, it’s — really — it does not embody the spirit of the American nation.
‘That is not the land of the free and the home of the brave, the beacon of our democracy that our people have learned to look up to across the world.’
Upon his return, Trump made a joke out of pronouncing Puerto Rico. The whole thing was weird.
