LONDON — The U.K. will launch an agricultural trade commission to advise the government on how to protect farmers in its negotiations.

International Trade Secretary Liz Truss said agreements with other nations “must be fair and reciprocal to our farmers, and must not compromise on our high standards of food safety and animal welfare.”

The commission will consider how the U.K. can avoid undercutting its farmers and maintain standards, reflect consumer interests and push via the World Trade Organization for better standards around the world.

Minette Batters, the president of the National Farmers Union, said she was “very pleased that the government is taking concrete action to address the challenges of safeguarding our high food and farming standards.”

The commission will produce a report for presentation to parliament, but its recommendations will be advisory onlyRead More – Source
