Support drops for Germany’s Jamaica coalition: poll

A majority of German voters believe a coalition government comprising the Christian Democrats (CDU/CSU), the liberal Free Democrats (FDP) and the Greens — known as the Jamaica coalition — won’t be good for the country, according to a poll published late Thursday.

The poll, commissioned by German broadcaster ARD, found 45 percent of the 1,005 people surveyed supported the three-way coalition, down 12 points from last month. Fifty-two percent said Jamaica would be “bad” or “less good” for Germany.

Exploratory talks between the three parties have thus far failed to yield significant progress on forming a government following Germany’s September 24 general election.

Greens voters in particular have cooled on the tie-up, with 55 percent now backing a Jamaica government, down from 76 percent a month ago. Support for Jamaica is still above 70 percent among CDU/CSU and FDP voters.

Despite falling support, a clear majority — 68 percent — said the three-way coalition is likely to emerge to govern Germany once negotiations conclude. If talks fail, 75 percent said they wanted a new election while 20 percent preferred a minority government.
