Newly elected German AfD politician convicted over football fight

Alternative for Germany (AfD) politician Sebastian Münzenmaier was convicted of assisting in committing dangerous bodily harm during a fight among football fans, German media reported Thursday.

A court in Mainz sentenced Münzenmaier, who was elected in September to the German Bundestag, to a six-month suspended sentence and to pay a €10,000 fine.

The court determined that Münzenmaier had helped members of the 1. FC Kaiserslautern ultras ambush and assault supporters of Mainz 05 five years ago. According to the court, he picked up some Kaiserslautern supporters at a gas station and brought them to a stadium in Mainz where the attack took place with Münzenmaier’s “knowledge and willing.”

Witnesses told the court that the attack had been planned well in advance.

Münzenmaier called the court ruling “intolerable,” and “a joke.”

The conviction will not have an impact on Münzenmaier entering the Bundestag next week because the crime of assisting in committing dangerous bodily harm is a misdemeanor.

Münzenmaier’s AfD won its first seats in the German parliament in the national election last month, becoming the first far-right party to make it into the Bundestag in the country’s postwar history.
