Google reveals top searches of 2017 and shows how the UK went mad for Meghan Markle

She’s the actress who bagged a prince and will soon become the newest member of our royal family.

Now Google has released statistics which demonstrate the remarkable intensity of the Meghan Markle-mania which swept the nation this year.

The princess-to-be’s name is the top Google search term of 2017 in the UK, followed by the iPhone 8 and Hurricane Irma.

The iPhone 8 was believed to be the name of Apple‘s flagship smartphone, which was later named the iPhone X and released to critical acclaim and commercial success.

Big news events also feature on Google’s list, with people searching for information about the Manchester bombing and Grenfell Tower followed by spikes in search interest for volunteering and donating to charities to help the victims.

Fidget spinners also proved wildly popular, coming in at fourth place.

Google also released a list of the ‘ how to’ questions people asked it this year.

The top query was ‘how to make slime‘, which is squishy, gooey stuff that’s become a playground craze.

People also wanted to know how to make a Yorkshire pudding, build a fidget spinner and, predictably, stay young.

British searchers also wanted to know what a hung parliament was and also wanted clarification about the Antikythera mechanism, which is often referred to as ‘the world’s first computer’.

What people asked Google during 2017

Google’s lists also reveal that the TV show with the most interest was 13 Reasons Why, followed by I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, Strictly Come Dancing, Celebrity Big Brother and Game of Thrones.

The top films were Beauty and the Beast, It and Dunkirk while the UK’s top trending recipe queries were for chilli con carne, spaghetti bolognese, beef bourguignon, beef stroganoff and hot cross buns.
