Jeremy Hunt: UK wont rule out China sanctions over Hong Kong clampdown

Britains Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said there “would be serious consequences” if China violated its agreement with the U.K. over Hong Kong and would not rule out imposing sanctions or diplomatic expulsions as a result of the crackdown on protests in the former British colony.

“Im not saying anything about what those consequences might be,” Hunt told the BBCs “Today” program Thursday, after refusing to rule out sanctions. “No foreign secretary would ever spell out precisely what would happen in a situation like that.”

But asked whether Brexit Britain could afford to snub China, Hunt said: “In the end, this is a country that has always defended the values we believe in,” adding Britain would not simply “gulp and move on.”

The U.K. summoned Chinas ambassador to the Foreign Office Wednesday, after Beijings envoy Liu Xiaoming accused Britain of interfering in Hong Kong. The comments came after Hunt tweeted earlier in the week of the U.K.s “unwavering” support for protestors in the former British colony.
