Jacob Rees-Mogg demands Theresa May QUITS as Prime Minister

Rees-Mogg called for a Brexit-supporting MP to step forward to take the reigns after Mays humiliating backtrack on Monday.

The PM cancelled the “meaningful vote” on her Brexit deal, and instead went grovelling back to the EU.

She claimed the vote was being delayed so further clarification could be sought on the border with northern Ireland.

May travelled across Europe yesterday, while back at home the sharks were circling – leading to today's no-confidence vote.

She promised to fight-on as she addressed the nation from the steps of Downing Street this morning – with the vote expected from 6pm to 8pm.

Rees-Mogg compared Mays approach to Brexit as like a Carry On film – saying it is “absurd and humiliating” in a column for The Sun.

The MP for North East Somerset fired the starting gun on the challenge to the PM when he stood on the steps of the House of Commons calling for her to go.

Mays deal – the Brexit Withdrawal Agreement – has been condemned by the right-wing fringes of the Tory party who claim it leaves us too closely tied to Europe.

Divisions continue to loom over Britain as campaigners on the other side call for a Peoples Vote or for the government to tally cancel Brexit.

He wrote: “The Governments Policy, personally linked to the Prime Minister and the operation at Downing Street, has produced an agreement that fails to deliver Brexit and breaks Theresa Mays own promises.

"This has lost her the confidence of the House of Commons, for she can no longer push her most important business through, and by all constitutional precedence she ought to resign.

"Mrs May is a decent person with many honourable characteristics but her handling of Brexit has been hopeless, and has left the country, the Conservative Party and the Government humiliated.”

Britain faces the prospect of a Tory leadership contest and getting a new Prime Minister with just 107 days to go until the country crashes out of the EU on March 29.

Rees-Mogg wrote: “A London cab driver told me yesterday, he did not vote for a deal. He voted to leave."

"That widespread sentiment is not honoured in the Withdrawal Agreement, which subjects the United Kingdom to the European Union as a vassal state or colony.

"Yet the humiliation is even greater for having failed even to allow her deal to be voted on in Parliament.

"Fearing a huge defeat the Prime Minister is now scurrying around the Continent asking for something she said was impossible a few days ago.”

Mrs May will address Conservative MPs at a meeting of the 1922 Committee at 5pm this evening, immediately before voting begins. A source said she would also be speaking to individual Tory MPs during the day.

She needs the support of 158 MPs in the ballot – half of the parliamentary party plus one – in order to remain as leader.

But some observers believe that a large vote of 100 or more against the PM might be enough to make Mrs May question whether it is worth carrying on.

She also has to face the Commons at what may prove to be her last session of Prime Minister's Questions at noon.
