A Georgia Democratic lawmaker is endorsing Republican President Donald Trump for reelection.
State Rep. Vernon Jones, whose district includes parts of metro Atlanta, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution he appreciates Trumps criminal justice reform efforts and the presidents economic policies.
“There are a lot of African Americans who clearly see and appreciate hes doing something thats never been done before,” Jones said. “When you look at the unemployment rates among black Americans before the pandemic, they were at historic lows. Thats just a fact.”
Jones is the first elected Democratic official in the state to back the presidents reelection campaign.
The endorsement spawned criticism, including from state Sen. Nikema Williams, who chairs the states Democratic Party. She said Jones is an “embarrassment” who doesnt represent Georgias values.
