{"id":98164,"date":"2018-11-06T04:00:42","date_gmt":"2018-11-06T04:00:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/borders-wont-be-ready-for-no-deal-brexit-uk-watchdog-warns-12\/"},"modified":"2018-11-06T04:00:42","modified_gmt":"2018-11-06T04:00:42","slug":"borders-wont-be-ready-for-no-deal-brexit-uk-watchdog-warns-12","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/borders-wont-be-ready-for-no-deal-brexit-uk-watchdog-warns-12\/","title":{"rendered":"Borders wont be ready for no-deal Brexit, UK watchdog warns"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Its impossible to build the necessary infrastructure on the U.K.s borders in time for a no-deal Brexit in March 2019, the British governments spending watchdog warned Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWithout the necessary infrastructure, HMRC, Border Force and others may not be able to fully enforce compliance regimes at the border on day one,\u201d according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nao.org.uk\/report\/the-uk-border-preparedness-for-eu-exit\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> by the National Audit Office (NAO). Weaknesses in the border infrastructure could be exploited by organized crime, the watchdog added.<\/p>\n<p>As of last month, 11 of the 12 major projects to replace or change key border systems \u201cwere at risk of not being delivered on time,\u201d the NAO said.<\/p>\n<p>The NAO concluded that \u201cthe most complex issues relating to the border in the event of the U.K. leaving the EU without a deal remain to be solved.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even if the U.K. government does strike a withdrawal agreement with the EU and has until December 2020 to prepare for Brexit, authorities would still need to undertake \u201csignificant work\u201d to design and implement any new arrangements, though \u201cthe scale of this change will be nowhere near that required if the U.K. and the EU cannot reach an agreement,\u201d the report noted.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of the outcome of the negotiations, \u201cindividuals and businesses will feel the impact of a sub-optimal border,\u201d the NAO said.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Read this next: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/nuclear-fear-intermediate-range-nuclear-forces-treaty-start-last-us-russia-arms-pacts-could-simply-die\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nuclear fear: Last US-Russia arms pacts could simply die<\/a><\/em><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Its impossible to build the necessary infrastructure on the U.K.s borders in time for a no-deal Brex..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":98165,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-98164","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
