{"id":96243,"date":"2018-10-25T04:17:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-25T04:17:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/apple-google-facebook-line-up-to-pay-homage-to-eu-privacy-rules\/"},"modified":"2018-10-25T04:17:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-25T04:17:00","slug":"apple-google-facebook-line-up-to-pay-homage-to-eu-privacy-rules","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/apple-google-facebook-line-up-to-pay-homage-to-eu-privacy-rules\/","title":{"rendered":"Apple, Google, Facebook line up to pay homage to EU privacy rules"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Top executives from Facebook, Google and Apple heaped praise on Europes revamped data protection standards Wednesday, just as these companies face ever tighter scrutiny over privacy and the prospect of similar restrictions in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Apples Tim Cook \u2014 the only U.S. CEO to appear in person \u2014 spoke in the strongest terms, calling for a federal U.S. privacy law to match Europes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/ready-or-not-here-comes-the-general-data-protection-regulation\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">General Data Protection Regulation<\/a>, and warning about the rise of a \u201cdata industrial complex\u201d that would work against regular people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur own information, from the everyday to the deeply personal, is being weaponized against us with military efficiency,\u201d he told a conference of privacy professionals in Brussels.<\/p>\n<p>Appearing via video link, Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg and Googles Sundar Pichai also heralded the advent of privacy legislation, though in less explicit terms, while acknowledging the challenge of \u201cgetting privacy right\u201d on their global platforms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf people dont trust us, then they wont use us,\u201d said Zuckerberg, whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/symposium-judgments-on-mark-zuckerberg-in-brussels\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">last personal appearance<\/a> before European lawmakers in Brussels misfired, after his social network allegedly mishandled the data of up to 87 million users by handing the information over to Cambridge Analytica.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cChanges in European law doesnt change the pressure on the FTC\u201d \u2014 <em>Noah Phillips, U.S. federal trade commissioner<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Yet the show of support for Europes privacy law conceals vast differences in how the United States and Europe conceive of privacy, as well as between many of Silicon Valleys biggest names.<\/p>\n<p>Cooks warning about the \u201cdata industrial complex\u201d and calls for U.S. laws was far more pointed than statements from the Facebook or Google bosses, whose business models largely rest on harvesting vast amounts of personal data.<\/p>\n<p>Noah Phillips, a U.S. federal trade commissioner, acknowledged that the onset of Europes new privacy standards has triggered a debate about privacy in the United States. \u201cGDPR has certainly had an impact on the national conversation in the U.S.,\u201d he told POLITICO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIts as robust a conversation weve had on this issue certainly for a long time,\u201d he added. \u201cBut changes in European law doesnt change the pressure on the FTC.\u201d<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/GettyImages-492533118-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Industry watchers and data protection campaigners questioned the firms motivations| Chip Somodevilla\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>A series of privacy scandals concerning Facebook and Google \u2014 who use peoples data to target them with digital advertising \u2014 are sharpening consumers interest in privacy on both sides of the Atlantic.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities in Europe and the United States are carrying out investigations into potential misuses of personal data, a target that senior executives chose not to emphasize on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Googles Pichai said the search giant \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/google-data-breach-privacy-data-protection\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">suffered its own data leak<\/a> earlier this year \u2014 is offering its users a greater say over what data the company collects. He added that Google is now advocating for comprehensive privacy principles across its digital services.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGetting privacy right requires careful consideration of the hard issues that come up every day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Legislate, then add water<\/h3>\n<p>While tech executives promoted their privacy credentials, industry watchers and data protection campaigners questioned the firms motivations amid a growing regulatory push worldwide to pass new legislation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA year ago, their playbook was self-regulation,\u201d said Alastair Mactaggart, a campaigner who helped to pass Californias recent privacy regulation, in reference to the tech companies. \u201cBut now, they want a federal law that is weak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Beyond Europes revamped privacy rules, which came into force at the end of May, countries from Brazil to Japan have similarly proposed new data protection standards, while U.S. lawmakers \u2014 after a series of setbacks \u2014 are again starting to consider federal rules.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>For firms like Facebook and Google, ensuring ongoing access to data remains key amid the global overhaul of data protection standards.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Amid this privacy push, some tech companies are quickly changing their tune, with some advocates warning that these firms are now in favor of new legislation so that they can lobby to water it down as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>Not surprisingly, tech officials disagree.
