{"id":93317,"date":"2018-10-09T06:20:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-09T06:20:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/sweden-tries-to-make-digital-lightning-strike-twice\/"},"modified":"2018-10-09T06:20:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-09T06:20:50","slug":"sweden-tries-to-make-digital-lightning-strike-twice","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/sweden-tries-to-make-digital-lightning-strike-twice\/","title":{"rendered":"Sweden tries to make digital lightning strike twice"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>STOCKHOLM \u2014 Patricia Sj\u00f6berg, an elementary school teacher in the Swedish capital, is not a coder.<\/p>\n<p>But when her 9-year-olds started to pepper her with questions about how to wirelessly control Lego windmills in a recent math class, she soon found herself trying to decipher digital coding on the kids tablets to make the mini blades spin and whirl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIm learning just as they are,\u201d said Sj\u00f6berg, who teaches at a 1,000-pupil school in a neighborhood in southern Stockholm. \u201cWere doing this together. You just have to throw yourself out there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Similar scenes are now playing out across this country of 10 million people, as Sweden rolls out a digital reboot to its nationwide education system. Faced with heavy competition from the United States and China, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.se\/20180523\/sweden-among-eus-most-advanced-digital-economies-official-ranking\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tech-savvy nation<\/a> is hoping its new programming and digital literacy courses will give its students a new competitive edge.<\/p>\n<p>The Nordic country is trying to hit the digital jackpot for the second time.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly you have hundreds of schools that now need to do this. Its a critical moment\u201d <em>\u2014 Fredrik Heintz, computer science professor at Link\u00f6ping University<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Roughly 30 years ago, government officials <a href=\"http:\/\/swedishstartupspace.com\/2013\/09\/23\/sweden-game-development\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">rolled out<\/a> a nationwide subsidized computer and internet broadband program, giving even the poorest of Swedes access to costly digital tools that, for many elsewhere, were out of reach.<\/p>\n<p>That investment is credited with nurturing a generation of digital savants, some of whom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/list\/politico-28-class-of-2017-ranking\/daniel-ek\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">went on to help build<\/a> tech giants like Spotify, the global music-streaming service, and King, the <a href=\"https:\/\/discover.king.com\/about\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">online gaming company<\/a> behind mobile hits like Candy Crush.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Sweden faces a tougher challenge: keeping up its digital momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Others will be watching closely. Lawmakers, teachers and education policymakers worldwide are grappling with the same challenge: how to ready students for a digital world in which technologies like artificial intelligence are changing faster than people can upgrade their smartphones.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jump_sweden2_77x74-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Tablets are an important part of the digital curriculum |<\/p>\n<p>Advocates stress that spreading digital skills across the countrys curriculum \u2014 from science and math classes to social studies and religion courses \u2014 will be crucial if the<br \/>next generation of Swedes is to succeed in an ever-more connected world.<\/p>\n<p>Others doubt whether the countrys schools \u2014 many of which remain under-resourced and lacking digitally skilled teachers \u2014 will be able cope with the high expectations of training kids to succeed in the 21st century workforce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuddenly you have hundreds of schools that now need to do this,\u201d said Fredrik Heintz, a <a href=\"https:\/\/liu.se\/en\/employee\/frehe08\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">computer science professor<\/a> at Link\u00f6ping University, a two-hour drive south of Stockholm, who advised on the digital upgrade to the national curriculum. \u201cIts a critical moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Staying a step ahead<\/h3>\n<p>Sweden is starting its digital reboot on the front foot.<\/p>\n<p>With widespread access to high-speed internet access and a well-educated, mostly tech-literate population, the country is already <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2014\/12\/15\/technology\/stockholms-housing-shortage-threatens-to-stifle-start-ups.html\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one of the worlds most vibrant digital ecosystems<\/a>, including <a href=\"http:\/\/reports.weforum.org\/global-information-technology-report-2016\/networked-readiness-index\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">placing third<\/a> \u2014 behind Singapore and Finland \u2014 in the World Economic Forums \u201cNetwork Readiness Index,\u201d a global ranking of digital preparedness.<\/p>\n<p>But with technology becoming increasingly central to how people live, work and relax, local policymakers want kids as young as six years old not just to be \u201cready\u201d for a truly digital economy \u2014 but to be able to stay one step ahead of it.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jump_sweden4_77x63-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Christian Magnusson, director of education at Swedens National Agency for Education<\/p>\n<p>That involves a new curriculum prioritizing digital skills, introducing coding in math and science classes and promoting online literacy and critical thinking in social studies and religion courses. Little, if any, new funding has been made available for the nationwide rollout, though Stockholm has funded coding courses for roughly 3,500 (mostly math) teachers.<\/p>\n<p>The goal is not just to teach students the basics of programming \u2014 a skill that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/magazine\/story\/2018\/01\/04\/future-work-independent-contractors-alternative-work-arrangements-216212\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">is in high demand<\/a> worldwide \u2014 but also to help them spot potential digital falsehoods shared through social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need students to be aware about whats happening online,\u201d said Christian Magnusson, director of education at Swedens National Agency for Education, and the main architect of its digital push. \u201cEvery day decisions are now made by algorithms. Kids need to know whats going on.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Digital skills reboot<\/h3>\n<p>Magnusson, a soft-spoken bureaucrat, was tasked with identifying the skills the next generation will need to thrive in a digital world \u2014 one where learning basic coding and deciphering mistruths online are as critical as memorizing multiplication tables and gaining foreign language skills.<\/p>\n<p>Like everything in egalitarian-minded Sweden, his eventual plan \u2014 which was proposed to lawmakers in 2016, adopted a year later and made mandatory in August \u2014 centers on giving all students equal access to these digital tools.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne of the main purposes of the reform is to reduce the gap between those who are ahead and those who are behind,\u201d Magnusson said in a recent interview at the ministry, housed in a 1960-style brutalist building in central Stockholm.<\/p>\n<p>Its not an easy task.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jump_sweden1_222x207-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>In Patricia Sjobergs class, children and teacher learn unfamiliar digital skills together<\/p>\n<p>While the Nordic country has some of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecdbetterlifeindex.org\/countries\/sweden\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">highest living standards<\/a> anywhere in the world, its population \u2014 on par with that of Michigan \u2014 is spread across almost twice the area. Many of the more-sparsely populated areas in the north remain relatively under-funded and under-resourced compared to their southern counterparts, notably those in Stockholm.<\/p>\n<p>Swedens decentralized education system also means cash-strapped local municipalities, not the national government, are in charge of the reboot of the education system. That means basic tech infrastructure like high-speed internet and computer access \u2014 not to mention access to qualified teachers \u2014 can vary markedly between neighboring cities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt differs a lot between schools,\u201d said Annika Ag\u00e9lii Genlott, an official at the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, who is in charge of creating a national plan to help municipalities handle the new curriculum. \u201cA lot depends on the principal and teachers.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>Its not just coding<\/h3>\n<p>Kalle Enstr\u00f6m is better placed than most Swedish principals when it comes to tackling the reforms.<\/p>\n<p>As the head of one of Stockholms most digitally literate schools \u2014 he has two full-time IT experts at his disposal \u2014 Enstr\u00f6m has spent years preparing his school for a digital push by retraining his staff, reworking the curriculum to focus on digital skills and buying new equipment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have to step it up,\u201d he said in one of his tech-focused classrooms, complete with high-speed Wi-Fi access, more than 30 iPads and two 3D printers. \u201cBefore, there was room to see how things played out, but now its all mandatory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/jump_sweden3_77x63-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Kalle Enstr\u00f6m, rector at \u00c5rstaskolan<\/p>\n<p>In a recent class, the policy reforms came face to face with the realities of everyday teaching.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Fernstr\u00f6m, a fifth-grade math and Swedish teacher, asked his cohort of 10-year-olds to figure out the sequence of movements of a fellow student, who he had directed \u2014 partly in Swedish, partly in English \u2014 to walk around the room following a set of instructions.<\/p>\n<p>The goal? To learn that one action led to another, a basic requirement for digital programming. \u201cYou want to use it as a problem-solving tool,\u201d said Fernstr\u00f6m as his students practiced the rehearsed movements around the classroom. \u201cYou have to see it as an opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But the focus is not just on programming.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/arstaskolan-5-714x476.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>There are elements of traditional learning that are vital to understanding how digital programming works<\/p>\n<p>Enstr\u00f6m and his 80-person staff teach students \u2014 between the ages of 6 and 16 \u2014 about critical online thinking by encouraging them to write stories on their tablets to hone their language skills, create book covers for their projects in art class and then upload them onto a custom-built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bibblis.se\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">online library<\/a> where anyone can read, download and write reviews of the students work.<\/p>\n<p>Kids are also helped to promote their e-books through social media as if they were real authors, as well as taught how to respond to potentially negative reviews in ways that offer real-world examples for often complex topics like digital misinformation and online trolling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want them to understand this is how they can get their view across online,\u201d said Micke Kring, the schools main tech adviser, who also built a <a href=\"http:\/\/kunskapshubben.se\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">YouTube-style online video portal<\/a>, so that students could upload <a href=\"http:\/\/talasomted.se\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">TED-talk style presentations<\/a> and podcasts to share with friends and family.
