{"id":92637,"date":"2018-10-03T00:00:54","date_gmt":"2018-10-03T00:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/philip-hammond-uk-will-enforce-hard-border-in-ireland-if-there-is-no-brexit-deal-2\/"},"modified":"2018-10-03T00:00:54","modified_gmt":"2018-10-03T00:00:54","slug":"philip-hammond-uk-will-enforce-hard-border-in-ireland-if-there-is-no-brexit-deal-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/philip-hammond-uk-will-enforce-hard-border-in-ireland-if-there-is-no-brexit-deal-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Philip Hammond: UK will enforce hard border in Ireland if there is no Brexit deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BIRMINGHAM, England \u2014 Britain would have to enforce controls on the Irish border if the U.K. leaves the European Union without a deal, Chancellor Philip Hammond said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>In remarks that appear to undermine the official government position that the U.K. will do all it can to avoid border checks after Brexit, Hammond said that under World Trade Organization rules, London would have no choice but to reinstate checks.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a fringe event at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/birmingham-make-or-bust-week-for-theresa-may-tory-conference\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Conservative Party conference in Birmingham<\/a>, Hammond said: \u201cThe challenges around the Irish border are around the legal requirements we will have if we are not in a trade bloc within the European Union to operate the WTO-compliant border, which does require checks at the border. Thats what the WTO rules require.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are depending on the WTO to regulate our relations with the rest of the world, we will have to comply with the rest of WTO regulations or we will find we cant enforce our WTO rights against others,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Hammonds remarks are in stark contrast to Prime Minister Theresa Mays refusal to answer the question in her interview with the BBCs Andrew Marr Show on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if she could guarantee there will not be a hard border in Ireland in the event of a no-deal Brexit, May said: \u201cWe are working to make sure that we leave with a good deal. Thats what my focus is on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pressed again, she replied: \u201cIf we leave \u2014 if we get to the point of no deal, were making the preparations because we dont know whats going to come out of the negotiations.
