Racial abuse, discrimination and the \u201cbad version of nationalism\u201d that promotes exclusion and hatred are on the rise, and the media may need to be regulated to help curtail the problem, European Justice Commissioner V\u011bra Jourov\u00e1 warned today.<\/p>\n

A \u201cdangerous\u201d version of nationalism is \u201cnot only visible in the rising popularity of the extreme parties\u201d but is also evident in the political mainstream, which \u201caccept[s] some part of this rhetoric of division,\u201d the commissioner said in a speech in Vienna, according to pre-released notes obtained by Brussels Playbook<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jourov\u00e0 called on politicians and the press to take action.<\/p>\n

\u201cMedia can build the culture of dialogue or sow divisions, spread disinformation and encourage exclusion,\u201d the commissioner said. \u201cThe Brexit debate is the best example of that.\u201d Politicians should \u201cshow responsibility\u201d and \u201crestraint,\u201d and must \u201crealize that their words become justification for some people to act on their urges and their fears.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Czech politician pointed to far-right protests in Chemnitz<\/a>, the \u201canti-Soros campaign<\/a> in Hungary or growing anti-Muslim or anti-Roma rhetoric\u201d as examples of when \u201cexclusion, discrimination and lack of respect for minorities have spilled over from the margins to the center and dont meet enough resistance from the media, politicians or opinion leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n

The media is \u201cinstrumental in holding politicians to account and in defining the limits of what is unacceptable in a society,\u201d Jourov\u00e1 argued, before highlighting the front page of a British tabloid that labeled EU leaders \u201cdirty rats.\u201d<\/p>\n

She also called for potential new regulation for the media, saying she would \u201cadvocate for a European approach to media based on quality and smart regulation, if needed,\u201d adding that \u201cwe need to keep up our support for public broadcasters and independent media more broadly than just following the laws of markets.\u201d<\/p>\n
