{"id":90372,"date":"2018-09-01T13:15:47","date_gmt":"2018-09-01T13:15:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/eu-says-it-is-willing-to-scrap-car-tariffs-in-us-trade-deal-3\/"},"modified":"2018-09-01T13:15:47","modified_gmt":"2018-09-01T13:15:47","slug":"eu-says-it-is-willing-to-scrap-car-tariffs-in-us-trade-deal-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/eu-says-it-is-willing-to-scrap-car-tariffs-in-us-trade-deal-3\/","title":{"rendered":"EU says it is willing to scrap car tariffs in US trade deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels is willing to scrap tariffs on all industrial products, including cars, in its trade talks with the United States, EU trade chief Cecilia Malmstr\u00f6m said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe said that we are ready from the EU side to go to zero tariffs on all industrial goods, of course if the U.S. does the same, so it would be on a reciprocal basis,\u201d Malmstr\u00f6m told the European Parliaments trade committee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are willing to bring down even our car tariffs down to zero \u2026 if the U.S. does the same,\u201d she said, adding that \u201cit would be good for us economically, and for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Malmstr\u00f6ms comment goes beyond what was agreed in July in the <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_STATEMENT-18-4687_en.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">joint statement<\/a> between European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and U.S. President Donald Trump, which only mentioned eliminating tariffs, non-tariff barriers and subsidies for \u201cnon-auto industrial goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brussels and Washington are holding preparatory trade talks to define the scope of a potential future agreement. During a first meeting in Washington last week, an EU proposal for including cars in the discussions was rejected by the U.S., POLITICO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/politico-pro-morning-trade-uks-secret-weapon-mercosur-leak-australasia\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>The EUs car tariff of 10 percent is higher than the general U.S. auto tariff of 2.5 percent, but America imposes a 25 percent duty on light trucks and pickups.<\/p>\n<p>Malmstr\u00f6m insisted that the discussions are not about \u201crestarting TTIP\u201d but aiming for \u201ca more limited trade agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgriculture would not be in the agreement, nor public procurement as it looks to today,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Read this next: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/george-w-bush-vilnius-named-honorary-citizen\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">George W.
