{"id":89882,"date":"2018-08-29T12:15:31","date_gmt":"2018-08-29T12:15:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/trump-revives-threat-of-25-percent-tax-on-european-cars-8\/"},"modified":"2018-08-29T12:15:31","modified_gmt":"2018-08-29T12:15:31","slug":"trump-revives-threat-of-25-percent-tax-on-european-cars-8","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/trump-revives-threat-of-25-percent-tax-on-european-cars-8\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump revives threat of 25 percent tax on European cars"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump on late Tuesday again threatened to hit European cars with a 25 percent tax, seemingly forgetting about his pledge not to impose new tariffs on the EU as long as the two sides are making progress in trade talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to put a tax of 25 percent on every car that comes in from the European Union,\u201d Trump said at a campaign-style event in Charleston, West Virginia.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. administration is currently investigating whether imported cars pose a threat to national security, although U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/ross-auto-investigation-probably-wont-wrap-up-in-august\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said Tuesday<\/a> that the investigation possibly wont be finished before the November congressional election.<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to Trumps remarks on late Tuesday, U.S. administration officials sought to downplay them as rhetoric, saying Trump intends to keep to the agreement he struck in July with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker <a href=\"http:\/\/europa.eu\/rapid\/press-release_STATEMENT-18-4687_en.htm\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">to work toward<\/a> \u201czero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies on non-auto industrial goods.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>POLITICO <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/politico-pro-morning-trade-cars-back-roll-back-in-us-trade-talks-italys-china-love-vietnam-deal\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported Wednesday<\/a> that Brussels is keen to include cars in transatlantic trade talks in the longer term, although tariffs in this area probably wont go down to zero, mainly because of reservations on the American side to lift a 25 percent U.S. tariff on light trucks and pick-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Senior EU and U.S. officials met Monday in Washington for preparative trade talks in an Executive Working Group, which is supposed to map out the content and scope of a future trade deal until November.<\/p>\n<h2><em>Read this next: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/angela-merkel-bows-to-donald-trump-over-nazi-guard-jakiw-palij\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Merkel bows to Trump demand on Nazi guard<\/a><\/em><\/h2>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WASHINGTON \u2014 U.S. President Donald Trump on late Tuesday again threatened to hit European cars with ..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":89883,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-89882","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.9 -
