These studies involved about 2,000 quantum bits, or qubits \u2014 many more than the tens of qubits available in most quantum computers.<\/p>\n<p>The results, published in two recent studies in <em>Science<\/em> and <em>Nature<\/em>, provide a new realization of the vision of famed physicist Richard Feynman, who hoped to use quantum computers \u2014 rather than computers based on standard, or classical, physics \u2014 to simulate quantum systems and study their behavior. \u201cNature isn&#039;t classical, dammit, and if you want to make a simulation of nature, youd better make it quantum mechanical,\u201d he famously said in 1981.<\/p>\n<p>Performed on a computer built by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dwavesys.com\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">D-Wave Systems Inc.<\/a> of Burnaby, Canada, the simulations provide a way to study phenomena that are very difficult to replicate with classical computers. \u201cThese are really rather beautiful pieces of science,\u201d says physicist Seth Lloyd of MIT. The researchers are \u201cable to reproduce all kinds of predicted phenomena.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>D-Waves machines, however, have attracted skepticism, and some physicists are not convinced of the importance of the new results.<\/p>\n<p>     In a study published August 22 in <em>Nature<\/em>, D-Wave physicists describe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41586-018-0410-x\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">simulating the physics of a two-dimensional magnetic material<\/a>, identifying a transition in which whirlpoollike defects known as vortices pair up in the material when the temperature drops. The theoretical prediction of this phase transition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/nobel-awarded-using-math-shapes-explain-exotic-matter\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">won the 2016 Nobel Prize<\/a> in physics, and the phenomenon is relevant to the physics of superconductors, materials that transmit electricity without resistance at low temperatures (<em>SN: 10\/29\/16, p. 6<\/em>). The simulations results matched the output of simulations performed on classical computers.  <\/p>\n<p>Another simulation, reported July 13 in <em>Science<\/em>, replicated the behavior of a 3-D material that <a href=\"http:\/\/science.sciencemag.org\/content\/361\/6398\/162\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">transitioned between different magnetic phases<\/a> when the researchers changed variables such as an applied magnetic field. The observed phases included a disordered state known as a spin glass.<\/p>\n<p>Other teams previously have performed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/quantum-computer-simulates-hydrogen-molecule-just-right\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">simulations with quantum computers<\/a> (<em>SN Online: 1\/22\/10<\/em>), but those simulations involved fewer qubits. \u201cAt this size, its the first time that this type of computation is done,\u201d says D-Wave chief scientist Mohammad Amin, a coauthor of the <em>Nature<\/em> study. The more qubits, the more particles that physicists can simulate, allowing the computer to better mimic the physics that arises when many atoms get together in solid materials.  <\/p>\n<p>Sold commercially since 2011, D-Waves computers have stoked controversy. Scientists have debated whether the quantum machines really exhibit quantum behavior \u2014 such as the spooky linkages between distant particles known as entanglement \u2014 and whether the computers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/commercial-quantum-computer-fails-impress-new-test\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">can work faster<\/a> than classical computers (<em>SN: 7\/26\/14, p. 6<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The new results give a boost to D-Waves credibility by suggesting that quantum effects really are occurring inside the computer. \u201cIt does seem to be the case that theyre using a quantum process to simulate another quantum process,\u201d says physicist Daniel Lidar of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. Though the results did not provide direct evidence that the computer exhibits quantum effects, \u201cit seems unlikely that \u2026 this would have been successful had it been entirely classical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Still, some skeptics are unmoved by the results. \u201cThey havent addressed at all whether its a quantum system theyve got,\u201d says physicist Graeme Smith of the JILA research center in Boulder, Colo. And the new studies dont attempt to address the question of whether D-Wave performs more quickly than a classical computer.<\/p>\n<p>D-Waves quantum computer is a specialized type, based on a process called quantum annealing. While the computers currently under development by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencenews.org\/article\/quantum-computers-are-about-get-real\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google, IBM, Intel and others<\/a> are intended to be general purpose and could perform currently impossible feats like breaking data encryption schemes (<em>SN: 7\/8\/17, p. 28<\/em>), quantum annealing computers are useful mainly for solving a certain type of problem called an optimization problem, in which the computer must choose the best option among many possibilities. D-Wave computers have been used for such problems already, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/nature24047\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sifting through particle collider data<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0172505\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">detecting trees<\/a> in aerial images and picking the <a href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/abs\/1708.01625\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">best route for cabs<\/a> to travel around Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Using D-Wave to simulate quantum systems opens up new possibilities for the computer, says physicist Davide Venturelli of the Universities Space Research Associations Quantum Artificial Intelligence Lab at NASAs Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif.
