Only a day after the EU and U.S. struck a peace deal on trade, cracks are emerging over the sensitive topic of farming.<\/p>\n
U.S. President Donald Trump and European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker appeared in front of the White House on late Wednesday to parade a deal<\/a> that would avoid extra American tariffs on EU cars in exchange for talks<\/a> on \u201czero tariffs, zero non-tariff barriers, and zero subsidies on non-auto industrial goods.\u201d<\/p>\n Trump was also delighted that Europe would buy more<\/a> liquefied natural gas and soy beans from the EU, and spoke of a newfound \u201clove\u201d<\/a> for the EU.<\/p>\n His two most senior trade officials, however, soon enough insisted that all agricultural products (not just soybeans) should be part of the agreement \u2014 an anathema for the European Union.<\/p>\n \u201cIts more than soybeans. All agricultural products are something that will be discussed [in the trade talks with the EU],\u201d Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross told Fox News<\/a> on late Wednesday. \u201cSoybeans was simply a very timely example of those [agricultural products],\u201d he added.<\/p>\n Trumps chief trade enforcer, U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, also demanded<\/a> during a Senate hearing on Thursday that the EU deliver more. \u201cOur view is we are negotiating about agriculture,\u201d he told lawmakers. \u201cThats part of the project.\u201d<\/p>\n Brussels was quick to shoot down such suggestions. \u201cAgriculture is not part of the scope of the talks,\u201d an EU official told reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n \u201cIts clear that the U.S. side wouldve liked [it] but it has not been agreed, and Mr. Ross can say what he wishes but it doesnt correspond\u201d to the deal agreed, the official added. \u201cThere is no ambiguity in this regard.\u201d<\/p>\n
