{"id":86532,"date":"2018-07-17T03:55:42","date_gmt":"2018-07-17T03:55:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/salvini-italy-not-afraid-to-use-eu-veto-to-lift-russian-sanctions\/"},"modified":"2018-07-17T03:55:42","modified_gmt":"2018-07-17T03:55:42","slug":"salvini-italy-not-afraid-to-use-eu-veto-to-lift-russian-sanctions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/salvini-italy-not-afraid-to-use-eu-veto-to-lift-russian-sanctions\/","title":{"rendered":"Salvini: Italy not afraid to use EU veto to lift Russian sanctions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Italian government would \u201cnot be afraid\u201d to use its veto powers in the EU as a \u201clast resort\u201d to push the bloc into lifting sanctions against Russia, Interior Minister Matteo Salvini said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/salviniofficial\/videos\/10155919649368155\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a press conference in Moscow<\/a>, Salvini said Rome would work to ensure the sanctions \u2014 imposed by the EU after Russias annexation of Crimea in 2014 \u2014 are lifted through \u201cgood manners, numbers and the art of democracy,\u201d but added that unlike his predecessors, his government was \u201cnot scared\u201d of using vetoes to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIm not ruling anything out,\u201d Salvini said.<\/p>\n<p>The Italian ministers remarks came on the same day as Donald Trumps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/donald-trump-us-meeting-russia-vladimir-putin-helsinki-predicts-extraordinary-relationship\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin<\/a> in Helsinki, during which the U.S. president said he hoped the two would end up having an \u201cextraordinary relationship,\u201d and Putin declared the annexation of Crimea was legal.<\/p>\n<p>Salvini said Italys government would work on negotiations with the EU \u201cnight and day\u201d until they are satisfied.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have already demonstrated on the migration front that we are quite stubborn, and therefore I am convinced that we can bring home some concrete results,\u201d he said, an apparent reference to how Italy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/eu-leaders-reach-consensus-on-migration-at-summit-angela-merkel\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">held up last months European Council summit<\/a> over a discussion on migration policy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am counting on convincing them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Italian minister also echoed statements from Trump and Italian Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/conte-trump-russia-g8-breaks-with-eu-backs-call-for-to-return\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Giuseppe Conte<\/a> by expressing his support for allowing Russia to again \u201chave a seat at the table\u201d of what was once the G8 meeting of country leaders.
