{"id":84792,"date":"2018-07-08T03:06:40","date_gmt":"2018-07-08T03:06:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/matt-hancock-big-tech-not-too-big-to-regulate-2\/"},"modified":"2018-07-08T03:06:40","modified_gmt":"2018-07-08T03:06:40","slug":"matt-hancock-big-tech-not-too-big-to-regulate-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/matt-hancock-big-tech-not-too-big-to-regulate-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Matt Hancock: Big Tech not too big to regulate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>LONDON \u2014 The U.K. should not shy away from regulating technology firms, the digital secretary of state said today.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/event\/politico-london-playbook-breakfast-with-matt-hancock\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">POLITICO event<\/a>, Matt Hancock said current problems involving social media platforms could have been avoided if there were a legislative framework in place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was an attitude that pervaded for a generation that these companies are global, so you cant regulate them \u2014 not true. That the technology changes so fast you cant regulate \u2014 not true. That people dont really understand it, and therefore cant regulate it \u2014 also not true,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that although the best approach to regulating platforms is through global or international frameworks, the U.K. should be ready to legislate on their own.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the U.K. as a society, represented legitimately through parliament, and from the parliament in government, wants to do something, that is what we do.
