{"id":81195,"date":"2018-06-06T20:36:37","date_gmt":"2018-06-06T20:36:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/theresa-may-trumps-trade-tariffs-unjustified-5\/"},"modified":"2018-06-06T20:36:37","modified_gmt":"2018-06-06T20:36:37","slug":"theresa-may-trumps-trade-tariffs-unjustified-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/theresa-may-trumps-trade-tariffs-unjustified-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Theresa May: Trumps trade tariffs unjustified"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May criticized U.S. President Donald Trumps \u201cunjustified decision\u201d to slap tariffs on EU steel and aluminum.<\/p>\n<p>The tariffs \u2014 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum \u2014 affect the European Union, Mexico and Canada, and came into effect Friday.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, May said: \u201cI am deeply disappointed at the unjustified decision by the U.S. to apply tariffs to EU steel and aluminium imports.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe U.S., EU and U.K. are close allies and have always promoted values of open and fair trade across the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur steel and aluminium industries are hugely important to the U.K., but they also contribute to U.S. industry including in defence projects which bolster U.S. national security.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added that the EU and U.K. \u201cshould be permanently exempted from tariffs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/donald-trump-hits-us-allies-with-steel-aluminum-tariffs\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">EU, Mexico and Canada were previously given temporary exemptions<\/a> from the duties, which Washington said were necessary because of national security concerns. In the case of Canada and Mexico, the U.S. had hoped to address its concerns in the context of ongoing efforts to renegotiate <a href=\"https:\/\/ustr.gov\/trade-agreements\/free-trade-agreements\/north-american-free-trade-agreement-nafta\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">NAFTA<\/a>, but those talks have taken longer than expected and there is now no precise end date in sight, U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said. Talks with the European Union made some progress, but not enough to warrant a permanent exemption or another temporary exemption, he said.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/eu-announces-retaliation-against-trump-tariffs\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">EU said it would retaliate<\/a> against the U.S. move.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will now trigger a dispute settlement case at the WTO, since these U.S. measures clearly go against agreed international rules.
