{"id":79894,"date":"2018-05-26T00:45:09","date_gmt":"2018-05-26T00:45:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/ftse-100-round-up-smurfit-kappa-and-kingfisher-among-biggest-risers-today\/"},"modified":"2018-05-26T00:45:09","modified_gmt":"2018-05-26T00:45:09","slug":"ftse-100-round-up-smurfit-kappa-and-kingfisher-among-biggest-risers-today","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/ftse-100-round-up-smurfit-kappa-and-kingfisher-among-biggest-risers-today\/","title":{"rendered":"FTSE 100  round up: Smurfit Kappa and Kingfisher among biggest risers today"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/main-image\/full_width_article_body_image\/82715069-5b083b350b2af.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/ftse-100\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">FTSE 100<\/a> closed up 20 points today on 7,737 after a late rally.<\/p>\n<p>That marked a slight fall on last week when the market closed on 7,778 points.<\/p>\n<p>The biggest risers were paper giant Smurfit Kappa, Telecoms company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/bt-group\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">BT<\/a>, B&amp;Q owner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/kingfisher\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Kingfisher<\/a>, hospitality company Whitbread and hospital group Mediclinic, which all added at least three per cent to their share prices today.<\/p>\n<p>Smurfit Kappa had a good day after yesterday&#039;s confirmation its had acquired a Dutch paper business for \u20ac460m (\u00a3403m)as it attempts to fend off an \u20ac9.8bn takeover bid from US packaging firm International Paper.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/286406\/cardboard-company-smurfit-kappa-completes-eur460m-deal\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Under-siege cardboard company Smurfit Kappa completes \u20ac460m deal<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Kingfisher shares rose after rival home improvement chain Homebase was sold today for just \u00a31 by its Australian owners Wesfarmers to Hilco, which analysts said was good news for Homebase.<\/p>\n<p>BT shares rose after an unconfirmed report that infrastructure investors and private equity groups are interested in taking a stake in its Openreach division.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Read more<\/strong>: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/286411\/homebase-flogged-nominal-fee-hmv-owner-amid-uk-retail\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Homebase flogged for \u00a31 to HMV owner<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Royal Mail had the worst day on the market with shares falling 2.71 per cent after broker Berenberg downgraded its stock to &quot;sell&quot;.<\/p>\n<p>Oil stocks fell after speculation that Opec will raise output with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/bp\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">BP<\/a> the biggest faller of the group down two per cent.<\/p>\n<p>David Madden a market analyst at CMC Markets said: &quot;The FTSE 100 has a relatively large exposure to the energy sector, which accelerated the drift lower this afternoon.&quot;<\/p>\n<p>The pound weakened against the dollar falling less than half a per cent to $1.33.<\/p>\n<p>This followed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/286429\/uk-gdp-suffers-worst-rate-growth-six-years\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">disappointing GDP figures<\/a> today that showed that UK growth had dropped to its lowest rate since 2012.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/blockads.fivefilters.org\/acceptable.html\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The FTSE 100 closed up 20 points today on 7,737 after a late..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":79895,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-79894","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.5 -
