{"id":79771,"date":"2018-05-25T08:27:49","date_gmt":"2018-05-25T08:27:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/a-guide-to-the-irish-abortion-referendum\/"},"modified":"2018-05-25T08:27:49","modified_gmt":"2018-05-25T08:27:49","slug":"a-guide-to-the-irish-abortion-referendum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/a-guide-to-the-irish-abortion-referendum\/","title":{"rendered":"A guide to the Irish abortion referendum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Irish voters will on Friday decide whether to overturn the countrys near-total ban on abortion.<\/p>\n<p>The final polls ahead of the referendum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/news\/politics\/irish-times-poll-figures-highlight-reservations-among-yes-voters-1.3497798\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">predicted the ban would be reversed<\/a> but the anti-abortion campaign has been gaining ground in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>After polls close at 10 p.m. local time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rte.ie\/news\/2018\/0524\/965640-island_voting\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">national broadcaster RT\u00c9<\/a> will have an exit poll on its \u201cLate Late Show,\u201d from a survey of 3,000 people. But the full result wont be announced until Saturday, with constituencies only set to begin counting at 9 a.m. on May 26.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.referendum.ie\/general_information\/press-release-announcing-polling-day\/?v=english\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">3.2 million people registered to vote<\/a> in the referendum <a href=\"https:\/\/www.referendum.ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/18.04.03-Sample-ballot-paper-for-website-1-1.pdf\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">will be asked the question<\/a>: \u201cDo you approve of the proposal to amend the constitution contained in the undermentioned bill?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ballot will list <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oireachtas.ie\/en\/bills\/bill\/2018\/29\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the 36th amendment<\/a> \u2014 the governments proposal to repeal parts of the constitution including the eighth amendment (which grants mother and unborn child an equal right to life) and allow the parliament to legislate on abortion.
