{"id":77020,"date":"2018-05-10T20:45:44","date_gmt":"2018-05-10T20:45:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/michel-barnier-operational-brexit-solution-needed-for-northern-ireland-10\/"},"modified":"2018-05-10T20:45:44","modified_gmt":"2018-05-10T20:45:44","slug":"michel-barnier-operational-brexit-solution-needed-for-northern-ireland-10","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/michel-barnier-operational-brexit-solution-needed-for-northern-ireland-10\/","title":{"rendered":"Michel Barnier: Operational Brexit solution needed for Northern Ireland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>DUNDALK, Ireland \u2014 The EUs chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier on Monday demanded a \u201cclear, operational solution for Ireland and Northern Ireland,\u201d and said he would not attempt to broker the U.K.s internal disagreements about Brexit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me recall my role is to negotiate on behalf of the EU27,\u201d Barnier said, in an apparent reference to reports of deepening rancor within U.K. Prime Minister Theresa Mays government over maintaining a customs union with the EU.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have no intention of mediating between the different positions of Brexit [in the U.K. government],\u201d Barnier said.<\/p>\n<p>Barnier spoke at a news conference in Dundalk, where Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar repeated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/irish-prime-minister-progress-on-border-needed-by-june-eu-summit\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">his recent warning<\/a> that the Brexit talks would be paralyzed if there is no solution for the Northern Ireland border by the EU leaders summit in late June. U.K. Brexit Secretary David Davis last week called the June date an \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/david-davis-uk-will-be-in-weak-position-if-mps-reject-brexit-withdrawal-deal-leo-varadkar\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">artificial deadline<\/a>.\u201d Disagreement over the timing is emerging as a major point of contention in the talks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere has to be real and substantial progress, meaningful progress, before the June European Council, which is just two months away,\u201d Varadkar said Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to a reporters question, Barnier declined to elaborate on the potential consequences if the EU and the U.K. fail to reach an agreement on Ireland by the June summit. But Barnier warned pointedly that the U.K. would only secure a transition period to soften its departure from the EU if there is agreement on a formal withdrawal treaty, which officials have said must be completed by October to be ratified by the European and British parliaments ahead of the March 29, 2019 Brexit date.<\/p>\n<p>Barnier called the June European Council meeting a \u201cstepping stone toward the October European Council, which will be the final Council for reaching an agreement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barnier and Varadkar were in Dundalk to attend a session of the All-Island Civic Dialogue on Brexit, a government-sponsored series of meetings on the impact of the U.K.s departure on Ireland and Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>At a news conference ahead of the formal conference, they stressed the importance of the so-called backstop solution, already agreed by May, that would effectively keep Northern Ireland in the EUs customs union and put a customs border in the middle of the Irish Sea, in the absence of some broader agreement to prevent reimposition of a hard border.<\/p>\n<p>The U.K. government rejected the wording for the backstop in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/brexit-negotiation-withdrawal-text-what-it-says-and-what-it-means\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">draft legal text of a Withdrawal Agreement<\/a> presented by the EU in March. Davis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/pro\/northern-ireland-pushes-brexit-talks-toward-fresh-crisis\/\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told MPs last week<\/a> the U.K. hadnt \u201crejected\u201d the concept of a backstop: \u201cWeve just rejected the Commissions first attempt at it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Barnier also refused to respond to allegations by the leader of the Democratic Unionist Party in Northern Ireland, Arlene Foster, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2018\/apr\/30\/dup-arlene-foster-hits-out-at-michel-barnier-over-irish-border\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">who said Barnier is \u201cnot an honest broker<\/a>\u201d and accused him of not understanding \u201cthe wider unionist culture of Northern Ireland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barnier seemed perplexed by the assertion he has been overly aggressive. \u201cThere is no spirit of revenge, no spirit of punishment,\u201d he said. \u201cI am never aggressive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He noted he had met with Foster and Diane Dodds, a member of the European Parliament from the DUP.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy door is open,\u201d Barnier said. \u201cBut I am not ready to engage in any polemics.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DUNDALK, Ireland \u2014 The EUs chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier on Monday demanded a \u201cclear, opera..<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":77021,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[202],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-77020","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-finance"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.8 -
