A \u201ccustoms partnership\u201d with the EU that would see the U.K. collect tariffs on the blocs behalf to avoid a hard Irish border is \u201ca crazy system,\u201d according to<\/a> Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson.<\/p>\n

\u201cIts totally untried and would make it very, very difficult to do free trade deals,\u201d Johnson told the Daily Mail in an interview published late Monday. \u201cIf you have the new customs partnership, you have a crazy system whereby you end up collecting the tariffs on behalf of the EU at the U.K. frontier.\u201d<\/p>\n

The customs partnership is said to be the post-Brexit option preferred by Theresa May, Chancellor Philip Hammond and Business Secretary Greg Clark because it would allow Britain to strike trade deals after Brexit while avoiding a hard border across Ireland<\/a>. But it has caused a split Mays Cabinet, with reports<\/a> of an \u201cultimatum\u201d issued by senior Tory MPs who favor a \u201chighly streamlined customs arrangement,\u201d which involves using technology solutions to lower customs barriers.<\/p>\n

Brussels has already rejected<\/a> both of these customs models.<\/p>\n

Johnson, who spoke to the Daily Mail in Washington D.C., advocated a \u201cconfident free-trading Britain able to do its own deals,\u201d no longer \u201clocked in the lunar pull of Brussels.\u201d<\/p>\n

The foreign secretary hailed the possibility of a trade deal with the U.S. as a \u201cmassive opportunity\u201d and said U.S. President Donald Trump is \u201ckeen for Britain to get out of the EU\u201d so that U.K.-U.S. trade negotiations can begin.<\/p>\n
