{"id":76565,"date":"2018-05-07T03:03:06","date_gmt":"2018-05-07T03:03:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/the-ftse-100-is-closing-the-week-up-but-sterling-is-showing-weakness-3\/"},"modified":"2018-05-07T03:03:06","modified_gmt":"2018-05-07T03:03:06","slug":"the-ftse-100-is-closing-the-week-up-but-sterling-is-showing-weakness-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.bnreport.com\/en\/the-ftse-100-is-closing-the-week-up-but-sterling-is-showing-weakness-3\/","title":{"rendered":"The FTSE 100 is closing the week up but sterling is showing weakness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/assets\/uploads\/main-image\/full_width_article_body_image\/germany-literature-book-fair-932849212-5aec86b21b1dc.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The FTSE 100 index ended this week up 0.86 per cent on last Friday&#039;s close, though it lost some of the gains made at Wednesday&#039;s peak.<\/p>\n<p>Recovering publisher Pearson seemed to close the chapter on its <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/257281\/pearson-fails-make-grade-shares-fall-23-per-cent-after-firm\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">all-too-regular profit warnings<\/a>, saying at had <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/285287\/publisher-pearson-has-had-good-start-year-and-shares-rising\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">seen a &quot;good start&quot; to the year<\/a>. It led the blue chip index, with its shares ending the day up almost eight per cent.<\/p>\n<p>British Airways owner <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/international-consolidated-airlines-group-sa\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">IAG<\/a> also saw its share price surge as it revealed Norwegian Air had rebuffed two of its advances.<\/p>\n<p>Steel mining company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/evraz\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Evraz<\/a>, however, pulled some of the FTSE&#039;s gains down. It fell 1.71 per cent over the day, as the threat of Trump&#039;s steel tariffs and the company&#039;s Russian operations weighed on investor sentiment.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile in currencies, sterling was down against the dollar at the time of writing to $1.353 as the US nonfarm payrolls and jobs reports came out. Though the economic data was not stunning, the greenback lifted.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;GBP\/USD is at the mercy of the firmer US dollar, and the move has been exacerbated by the lack of economic indicators from the UK today,&quot; said CMC Markets analyst David Madden.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Traders arent holding out much hope for an interest-rate rise from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cityam.com\/company\/bank-of-england\" rel=\"noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Bank of England<\/a> next month, and the jump in the greenback is adding to sterlings woes.
