Tech stocks performed strongly overnight, lifting Wall Street from a disappointing open and buoying the FTSE towards weekly highs.<\/p>\n

The S&P and the Dow Jones had opened lower yesterday afternoon in the wake of US President Donald Trumps announcement that trade tariffs would be halted for another month.<\/p>\n

However, according to Jasper Lawler from London Capital Group, a strong first quarter performance<\/a> from Apple<\/a> helped boost indexes:<\/p>\n

\u201cLosses were clawed back throughout the session with the Nasdaq and the S&P closing in positive territory, lifted by a rally in tech stocks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite a sag in the Asian market overnight (the MSCI fell 0.3 per cent while Japans Nikkei shed 0.2 percent), the FTSE has continued its gains, opening up 44 points and edging towards 7600.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, sterling gained slightly but continues to be weak against the dollar, trading at $1.3632.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe pounds sustained slump has finally given the FTSE the gumption to cross 7560, a level not seen in 3 months,\u201d said Connor Campbell, financial analyst at Spreadex. \u201cWhether the index can maintain those highs, or if sterling can be dragged out of its current funk, may be down to Aprils construction PMI.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, its going to be a busy day in the financial world, and the market could remain volatile.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith oil trading above $75 per barrel, Sainsburys reporting, UK construction PMI and Eurozone GDP data all before the Federal Reserve<\/a> rate decision this afternoon, there is plenty for traders to focus on,\u201d said Lawler.<\/p>\n
